Olam Agri, one of Ghana’s leading food and agribusiness companies, has welcomed the Managing Director of National Investment Bank PLC (NIB), Dr. Doliwura Zakaria, to its wheat milling facility and newly constructed pasta manufacturing site in Kpone. The visit was an opportunity for Olam Agri to share its impact on Ghana’s food industry and discuss its plans to expand operations in line with the country’s broader development goals. It also served as a platform for the two institutions to explore areas of collaboration that support industrial growth and job creation. Dr. Zakaria was received by the Country Head of Olam Agri and Nutrifoods Ghana, Mr. Baibhav Biswas and Mr. Raghav Mandhana, Regional Financial Controller. They took him on a tour of the facility and discussed the company’s operations and future plans, particularly their new $40 million pasta manufacturing plant, which is set to significantly reduce the need for imported pasta by meeting half of Ghana’s current demand locally. The NIB MD commended the scale and ambition of the project, noting how such investments are key to strengthening the local economy. He also spoke about the government’s ongoing efforts to support industrial development, highlighting the importance of a stable currency and strong financial partnerships in achieving long-term economic growth. During the discussion, Olam Agri’s leadership shared concerns about the challenges facing the local flour industry. They pointed out that the high volume of imported flour—especially from Turkey—is putting pressure on local producers and preventing full utilization of existing production capacity. They called for stronger government policies under the “Make in Ghana” initiative to support local manufacturing and reduce dependency on imports, which would help conserve foreign exchange and create more jobs. Dr. Zakaria praised Olam Agri for its commitment to Ghana’s development and assured them of the Bank’s support. He expressed confidence in the potential for deeper collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive the country’s self-reliance in food production. Olam Agri has been a key player in Ghana’s food industry for over 30 years. Since launching its wheat milling operations in 2012, the company has played a major role in improving food security. Today, Olam’s activities span rice branding, cocoa processing, biscuit manufacturing, and tomato paste production—contributing to job creation and local economic growth. This visit underscored the importance of strong partnerships between government institutions and private companies in building a resilient and sustainable economy for Ghana’s future.
